General Check Up before Getting Pregnant

Most women that are looking into getting pregnant are perfectly healthy and do not have problems that could affect them. However, getting a previous check up before conception is useful as it gives the future mother a chance to plan and discover the best way to optimize the possibilities of having a healthy and easy pregnancy. Previous consultation is very useful to learn how to reach the ideal body weight and start out with the correct type of exercises; there are even times in which a doctor will suggest you start taking prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid.

There are cases though of women that do have medical problems that could affect their baby. When this happens the doctor along with the mother will look at a long list of conditions. Take the case for example of a woman that has diabetes; in these cases it is important to stabilize the sugar in the blood before getting pregnant and get regular check ups during the pregnancy. If a woman has high pressure (hypertension), the doctor will want to control it before the woman becomes pregnant because this can take time and might even imply changing medications several times. There are other cases as well, such as with women that have epilepsy, and in which case it is important to check the medications the woman is taking and control the condition.

In a consultation a doctor will also ask you if you smoke, if you take drugs, if you drink alcohol every day, or if you take illegal drugs. These questions are not an interrogation and the doctor will not yell at you, so don’t be afraid of answering as it is very important the doctor knows these things. These habits can be harmful for your pregnancy and quitting these things before conceiving is the best you can do for your future child. The doctor can help you find a way to do it or might even refer you to a support group.

It is also necessary to tell the doctor about any type of medication that you are taking, whether it is prescribed or over the counter medications. The doctor will also want to know about your diet, if you do exercise, if you take vitamins, if you are a vegetarian, if you do weight loss diets a lot, if you do vigorous exercise regularly etc, and these are all things you will need to let your doctor know about.
