Baby's Story

Postpartum Care

The time that it takes for a woman to recover from the delivery is different in the case of each woman. However almost all the changes the woman’s body goes through during pregnancy go back to normal during the postpartum period, which starts immediately after the woman has delivered the baby and the placenta and lasts approximately six to eight weeks.

As this time goes by you will probably ask yourself what you can do for the transition of the postpartum to be as easy as possible.

 Recovering After the Delivery
In most places (it is not the same everywhere though) the average time a woman stays in the hospital after having given a vaginal birth without any complications is in between twenty four to forty eight hours. After a cesarean the amount of time the woman will need to stay in the hospital can be prolonged to three and four days. In some hospitals, the mother will spend her recovery time in the same room she gave birth in, while in others she is moved to a different postpartum sector. In these cases the nurses will make sure to check the vital signs of the mother such as her arterial pressure, her pulse, temperature and breathing etc. and the nurses will also make sure to check on the baby as well. if it is necessary, the hospital can also administer pain medications for the pain prescribed by the doctor, and if it is the case, will help cure the epsiotomy or the incision of a cesarean.

Looking and Feeling Like a Mother
Having a baby has its cost and nobody leaves the hospital with a perfect body. Don’t worry though as most of the changes will pass by but you will feel and look different.

It is common that after having had the baby that your face will be somewhat swollen, and that you will have red patches on you. Some women even have black eyes or small visible veins around their eyes and well, look like they just got out of a boxing ring. All of these things are to be expected though since during the pushing stage a lot of blood vessels break in the face. But don’t get discouraged, as this will go away in a few days.

In a matter of a short time you will probably also feel like you did before, but you may still have some sporadic contractions that go on after the delivery. These contractions will be similar to those you went through during labor but will go away after a few days. You may be able to notice them more when you are breastfeeding your baby.
