Reading Books on his Own
There are three clear comprehension levels in the process of a child that is learning how to read. When the child goes dominating each one of them he will show signs of joy for his new discovery which is something exciting. Obviously the joy and delight for a child is the revelation that words have a meaning. For the child this is like a secret code that he shares with the adults. This will produce in the child a great amount of visible pleasure. After having discovered that words can be read and combined, and are therefore something more than simple labels that denote objects. This is also a new and wonderful revelation for a child. The last discovery that the child will probably see is very perceptible on the part of the parents. This discovery, which is the greatest of them all, is that the book that the child is reading represents something more than just a simple game of translating some secret names into objects, and that it is more then just decoding a chain of words to translate to

commentaries about objects and people. The child soon discovers with a great amount of pleasure, the great secret that this book is talking to him, and only to him. When the child is able to realize this, there will not be any way of stopping him. Then he will be a reader in all the sense of the word. He will have realized that the words that he already knows can be used in different ways in order to form completely new ideas. He no longer has to learn a set of new words each time he wants to read something. This is a real discovery.
There are very few things in his interior life that can compare with that. He can already have an adult that talks to him in a new conversation by simply grabbing a new book. He already has all of the knowledge of men in his hands. Not only the knowledge of the people he knows in his house and surroundings but the knowledge of distant people that he will never see. Even more yet, people that lived a very long time ago are able to talk to him, people that lived in other places and in other times. Being able to control our own destiny started, as we can see, with our capacity of reading and writing. Given that humans are able to read and write, we have been able to transmit to other humans in later centuries and remote places the knowledge that has been acquired. Human knowledge is accumulative. Human beings are eminently humans because we know how to read and write. This is the real importance of what a child discovers when he learns how to read. The child can even get to talk in is own way about his great discovery, so that you, his mother or father, make notice of him. If your child does this, make sure to pay close attention to him and listen to him with a lot of love and respect. What he is trying to tell you is very important.
