When Teaching your Child to Read, Do Not Bore Him
It is a lot easier that a child becomes bored because you are going too slow than if you are going too fast. Keep in mind that this very smart child could be learning, for example, a new language such as Japanese at this age, so do not bore him. Consider the splendid achievement that you have just attained. Your child has just dominated the greatest difficulty that he will have to overcome in all of his learning of reading. Along with the mother’s help the child will have learned: he has formed his vision enough and what is more important, his brain, in order to distinguish one written symbol from another one. He has also dominated one of the most important abstractions that he will have to face in life which is that he is already able to read words. Ok so something about the abc’s. Why is it that we have not started out by teaching the child the abc’s? The

answer to this question is very important. This is a basic of all teaching that should be started from that which is known and by what is concrete, in order to then get into the unknown and finally to get into the abstract stuff. There is nothing that can be more abstract for the brain of a two year old than the letter a. the fact that children learn it is an attribute to their genius.
It is pretty evident that if two year olds were more capable of maintaining reasonable discussions they would have left this situation pretty clear to the adults a long time ago. In such a case, when we presented a child with the letter a, he would ask himself “What is the a?” and what would we respond? Well, we would respond, it is an a because… well it is an a since…for the sound that we have invented for well…. And this is the way the explanation would be. In the end most of us without a doubt would say that it’s an a because we say it is an a. Fortunately we have not had to explain that to children because while it is possible that they do not understand the historic reasons of why an a is an a, and children do know that it is an a because we say it is, and this is usually enough of a reason for them. In any case, they have learned to these twenty six physical abstractions and what is more, the twenty seven hearing abstractions that go along with them. The set does not constitute a total of fifty and two possible combinations of sounds and images but an almost infinite number of possible combinations. All of this they will learn despite that we usually teach them this at five or six years of age, when it is a lot more difficult for them to learn. Thankfully we are wise enough to not start teaching law and med students such abstruse abstractions given that since they are young adults, they would not be able to handle it. What has been able to dominate our little fellow in the first step, visual discrimination, is very important.
