When Teaching your Child to Read Phrases Remember

Remember to start by reducing the size of the letter you have been using. This does not mean though that you have to reduce it too much to where your child is not able to see it or has difficulty reading what it says. You can try out with letters of inch in size. Use this size of letter for several weeks. If this does not seem to cause the child any problems, it means that the time has come to increase the number of words. If you have been using phrases of five words, step on to phrases of six words. But continue using one inch letters. Continue on for some time with phrases of six words. If everything goes well, reduce the size of the letters to 7/8ths of an inch. The most important rule that needs to be followed in this process is that of not every reducing the size of the letters and increasing the number of words at the same time. In first place reduce the size of the letters and continue on like this for a certain amount of time, and then increase the number of words in the phrase. Do both of these things gradually though. Remember the phrase can never go over in excess of size or of clarity but it can be too small or too confusing. It is not convenient to ever precipitate this process. If you reduce the size of the letter too quickly or increase the number of words too quickly, be warned that the interest of your child will become reduced. You can start out by not looking at what is written and limit yourself to looking at it yourself, because the card or the page will end up being too complex visually. If this occurs, limit yourself to going back to the size of the letter or the number of words you were using immediately before, and the child will recover his enthusiasm. Maintain this level during a good time before trying to change things again.

Actually you do not need to change the size and the color of the loose words. Concretely we have discovered that it is much easier both for the mother and the child to maintain loose words. But when you are preparing books with letter that are of one inch or with six words or more in one page, we suggest you change the red letters to black letters. When the words start to become smaller, black offers more contrast and makes the page become more readable. You are now preparing the stage for the last step of all and which just so happens to be the most exciting, the book. We have already cleared the way and it is time to continue with the next step.
